Designing with heart and heritage: a retrospective view.

I have practised as a self‑taught graphic designer for over three decades. My creative journey began when I saw Milton Glaser conceive his renowned “I ❤ NY” logo in the back of a taxi‑ride envelope - a powerful lesson in the potency of simplicity and emotion.

In the late 1970s I discovered Jamie Reid’s punk-inspired provocation and Peter Saville’s refined minimalism, which taught me that design can be bold and restrained at once. Vaughan Oliver’s immersive album covers and Malcolm Garrett’s typographic identities showed me how graphic art connects deeply with music and popular culture.

I’ve worked on global briefs, branding Shell Global Solutions internationally and creating material for labels such as EMI, Sony Classical and Island Records. I’ve also guided students at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts in building visual identities.

As I approach retirement, I am keen to share this global experience with local businesses and design agencies looking for fresh inspiration. My approach blends decades of professional work with a belief in culturally aware and emotionally rooted visual storytelling.

I continue to design and mentor, drawing on lessons from pioneering figures and driven by a lifelong passion for communication through visual form.
